About

Plein Air Artist Statement 2016

My interest in painting outdoors began over 15 years ago when I challenged myself to go into nature with limited supplies and see how resourceful of a painter I could be. With canvas placed directly on the ground, I often improvise with found instruments (branches, twigs, rocks, etc.) instead of brushes to draw and paint. The process is a synthesis of landscape and action painting I fondly refer to as Plein Air Primitive. The subjects of my paintings come from observing the energy and relationships between nature, earth and atmosphere, combined with my acknowledgement of the intrinsic visual refuge trees provide humans at our most primal level.
